Derbyshire will take on Essex in the County Championship Division 2 at County Ground, Derby. Both the teams would like to win their first game and give a kick start to their 2015 county campaign. Wayne Madsen is leading the Derbyshire squad and James Foster will be leading the Essex side. Both teams have few big names in their squad so we can expect a good game here.
Alastair Cook is the part of the Essex squad and it seems that he will play the county this season for Essex which is a very big news for them. Cook can produce a one man show for Essex too if all the other batsmen around him fails. Cook will be disappointed with his batting effort in recently concluded Ashes. He didn’t get any century in five match which is certain disappointment for a batsmen of his calibre. Along with Cook, Esses have Jesse Ryder, Ravi Bopara and Ryan Ten Deoschate to support him. Cook will be the main pillar of the Esses batting and the whole batting line up will revolve around him. Jesse Ryder has not played much competitive cricket after recovering from comma so he would like to get some runs under his belt to make some case for international recalling. Essex has a good spin option in form of Monty Panesar. After Swann retirement, Monty was supposed to take the role of spinner but he has disappointed everyone with his bowling and fitness. Now he would have to perform to get selected for the upcoming series against Pakistan in Asian Sub continent. Monty can be very handy in these condition where spinners get little assistance from the pitch which we had seen in the England tour of India in 2012.
Tilakaratne Dilshan and Martin Guptill will be the main batsmen for Derbyshire and they will bank on their foreign batsmen to score big and give fight to Essex. Martin Guptill was in excellent form in the World Cup so he would like to continue that form here too. Derbyshire also have the most accomplish batsman of today’s generation Hashim Amla in their squad. So, their batting looks very good and compact. Now they need to work on their bowling to be a decent squad. Bowling seems to be a weaker link of Derbyshire. They do not have any world class bowler, not even any bowler who has played any international cricket for any country. So they will have to rely on their batting more rather than bowling.
Two teams where both have good batsmen will be fighting then it’s going to be a batsmen friendly match and bowlers will have work little harder and earn the wickets. Essex seems to a better squad from here as they have Cook who is the best in the world right now at the business area. His experience as a player can also be very vital for team’s proportion. Derbyshire also have some world class batsmen but it’s time to see how successful they can be on English pitches. The bowling of Derbyshire is very weak then Cook will like to score some big run before Pakistan series. We will have to wait to see how much Derbyshire batsmen can be effective especially Dilshan who is used to play on low and slow pitches. If he takes his time and then plays the shots then there is no any reason why he can’t score run on the English pitches. It would be quite an interesting match with two of the strongest teams competing together to prove they are the champions and best of all.
