Series between Pakistan and Zimbabwe called off
In the recent announcements, the Cricket Boards of Zimbabwe and Pakistan have announced calling off the 50 over ODI series between the two countries. The series was scheduled to be hosted by Zimbabwe in the month of August. As a result of the proposal, the tri series between Pakistan, Zimbabwe and West Indies will also be called off. Zimbabwe was schedule to host the series during mid of August. It would have been a great chance for Zimbabwe which is placed at 11th rank in ODI. The team would have loved to host the tri-nation tournament. On the other hand, West Indies has also confirmed the participation in the tournament. If the series was carried on, it would have given a great chance to Zimbabwe team to uplift their ranking as they would have loved to play matches on their home soil. Earlier in July, Zimbabwe gave a tough fight to Team India as they were able to square T20 series with 1-1 draw.
West Indies has confirmed its participation to the tournament, while Pakistan Cricket Board has not given any proper reasoning for the cancellation of tour. The only thing which is known as of now is that the decision was taken unanimously by both Pakistan and Zimbabwe board. However, many cricket experts believe that the reason could because Pakistan has already raced past West Indies to eight spot after winning the last series against Sri Lanka and they don’t want to lose any match against the teams lower in rankings. Pakistan is placed at 90 points and also claimed the spot for Champions Trophy while West Indies are placed one spot lower at 9th rank with 88 points in bag. Bangladesh are placed comfortably at 7th spot with 96 points and two points behind England after winning their home series against Pakistan, India and South Africa in 2015.
Any loss to Pakistan from West Indies or Zimbabwe could prove to be fatal for the team’s chances in rankings table. Top eight teams would be playing in 2017 Champions trophy in England while the rankings till September 30th 2015 will be counted as a cut-off date for qualification.
