Sri Lanka A vs New Zealand A 2nd unofficial ODI will be on October 7th at Christchurch. Normally these kinds of unofficial series do not get a lot of attention from the fans or the media. But this year it seems that everyone is taking these unofficial series very seriously. Almost all major cricketing countries are playing unofficial tournaments too. From India to Australia all are playing unofficial ODI and test series. One of the main reasons behind these tours is to check out the young players of the country. A lot of players in international cricket arena are over 30 and they are going to announce their retirement in next couple of years. So it is only normal that the selector wants to check out the young talents of the country who are going to replace the legends.
Sri Lanka A is currently in New Zealand to play an unofficial series against the New Zealand A. The first game between these two teams saw some high-quality cricket. That match was no less entertaining that any international cricket matches. This will be a 4 match series. New Zealand won the first match, but that does not mean Sri Lanka team did not put up a good fight. It was a clash between two equal teams. Both countries selectors are successful in finding some great talents for the A teams. In the first ODI New Zealand skipper, H. D. Rutherford won the toss and decided to bat first. This decision was a little bit surprising to many as everyone thought he was going to opt out to bat first. But as the game began it started becoming clear why he took that decision. The pitch at first was supporting the bowlers and NZ has good medium pace bowlers in the team who took great advantage of the situation. But even though Sri Lanka A batsmen were finding it hard to score against the New Zealand pace attacks, it took some time for NZ bowlers to get the first breakthrough. Both the openers played really well. One of them Gunathilaka went on to score a very well deserve half century. In Sri Lanka A vs New Zealand A 2nd unofficial ODI, these openers will definitely be a target of NZ bowlers as they now know what they are capable of. If they are on the wicket for more than 20 over then they can take away the game from the NZ team. After the openers got out, number 3 batsman Vithanage also played a great innings of 58. New Zealand bowlers Sodhi and Santner took wickets at regular intervals after that. Thanks to these two bowlers the visitors were unable to build any more significant partnership later in the innings. The entire team was all out 214. Captain Priyanjan was a major flop as he was out for a duck.
This was a really small total and that too the Kiwis are playing at their home grounds. So they came to bat with a confident. Captain Ruthford made a significant contribution as an opener. His 43 gave the team a stability that they needed; it was a small run chase, so after the good start it was hard for SL team to get back on the game. The other opener Pollard also batted well and he did 59. Number 3 batsman did the rest of the work. He remained not out on 83. NZ A won the game in 49.3 over.
Now it is time for Sri Lanka A vs New Zealand A 2nd unofficial ODI and we hope that SL A team will make a good comeback in that.
